Through the Federal Education Jobs Act of 2010, the School District of Shorewood received a one-time allocation of $647,080 through the Wisconsin Department of Administration. These funds are to be utilized for jobs that provide educational and related services for early childhood, elementary, and secondary education. The District will be using the funds to provide additional academic support and to reduce class size. The District is analyzing additional needs and may retain funds to address similar needs in the 2011-2012 school which is allowed under the act. District Storm Damage Update,8/11
The School District of Shorewood experienced weather related damage during two recent storms that occurred on July 14 and July 22. During the July 14 storm, the damage was localized to the high school campus. All schools experienced water related damage during the July 22 rain storms. Although a number of buildings sustained water damage in last Thursday's severe rain, most flooding occurred in lower level and basement areas. Cleanup operations began immediately and will continue throughout August as we head toward the start of the new school year.

2010-2011 School Year Calendar - Important Dates
The following are important dates for the 2010-2011 school year. The district will continue to have early release Wednesdays this year. All schools will release by 2:15pm each Wednesday.
Shorewood School District, like so many around our state, is faced with the question how do we continue to provide high quality education with less financial resources? After steadily making changes to improve efficiency and effectiveness over the last 5 years, the district is taking the next logical step and analyzing the possibility of reconfiguring services. This year, the Shorewood School District is studying the possibility of grade reorganization. Superintendent McCann will present his findings to the School Board on August 10, 2010.
Congratulations to SHS Alumnus Raquel (Keirn) Rutledge, SHS Class of 1986, who earned the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for local reporting. Ms. Rutledge, a reporter with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, was recognized for her series Cashing in on Kids which detailed the lack of oversight and subsequent fraud and criminal activity related to the taxpayer subsidized State of Wisconsin’s child-care subsidy program.
The renovation of Capitol Drive has begun! Throughout the spring and summer months there will be major detours as the road is rebuilt. Transforming Public Education: A Regional Call to Action
In April, our local Cooperative Educational Service Agency (CESA #1) hosted a regional symposium that outlined a vision for public education in Southeastern Wisconsin. The event was the culmination of a year’s work by CESA #1 member superintendents.

The Milwaukee Journal profiled SHS graduate, Kate Baldwin on December 24, 2009. In the article she credits Shorewood High Drama Teacher, Barbara Gensler as one of her early local mentors. Powering Our Schools - Solar Electric System is Commissioned
The School District of Shorewood is excited to share that our two Solar Electric Systems were commissioned by WE Energies on Friday at Shorewood Intermediate School (SIS). Two systems, a 12.54KW roof mounted photo voltaic system and a smaller 2.24KW system were installed this summer. Both systems are expected to produce 18,391 kWh annually. The second system will be used as a demonstration system and as an educational tool for students and community members.
Congratulations To Our Five National Merit Scholarship Program Semifinalists and our Student Who Received Commended Status!
The School District of Shorewood is pleased to share that five high school seniors have been chosen as Semifinalists in the 2010 National Merit Scholarship Program. Congratulations to Nathaniel Froiland, Taylor Lipo-Zovic, Hallie Sanders, Maya Volodarskaya, and Margaret Wallace! The nationwide pool of semifinalists represents less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors. Also, congratulations to Jonas Yela who received commended status.
Progress Made on District Renovation and Maintenance Projects
Work on the Athletic Field is essentlally completed for this year. Renovation of theSHS Physical Education Building is underway. Plans are being developed for the renovation of the high school library which will take place next summer.
